I was thinking of what to say for the tenth anniversary of 9/11 since I couldn't let it go by unnoticed here. I thought about recalling where I was and what I was doing, but then I had a different thought.
Back in 2001 Terry and I watched baseball regularly. If there was a Giants game on in the evening we would watch it. That's not our behavior today, but it was then.
Obviously after 9/11 the baseball season was suspended for a number of days. When baseball returned we approached it with a different perspective. The broadcasters made clear that they knew that nothing was the same. And the broadcasts were different in subtle ways. One thing I remember was an American flag surrounding the graphic with the inning, score, and at-bat information. It was a small thing, but a clear reminder.
Yet baseball was back. I think that was a good thing. It was good for us to resume a sense of normalcy and to come together to enjoy those things that bring pleasure to our lives, even while in no sense being in any kind of denial.
I believe it helped.
