I told myself that I wasn't going to blog about Emmaus this year. I wasn't sure I had anything new to say. Pastor Koch's sermon yesterday changed my mind.
Those of you who follow the lectionary know that yesterday's Gospel for Year C is Luke 24:1-12 (though John chapter 20 can also be read). The passage in Luke is the one about the women finding the empty tomb. Pastor Koch pointed out that Jesus doesn't appear in the passage at all. "Where's Jesus?" he asks.
To find Jesus, keep reading beyond where the lectionary passage ends he told us. It's the Emmaus story.
I realized something that hadn't occurred to me before. In Luke Jesus appears first not to the disciples or to the women, but to an otherwise unknown pair: Cleopas and his companion (presumably Mrs. Cleopas).
Perhaps that says something about how we can experience the Christ ourselves today.
Here's my Emmaus blogs from 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
