As we moved past Easter Sunday and the stories immediately following the resurrection, the lectionary left Luke and turned to John and the long, almost philosophical dissertations he gives to Jesus. I asked the pastor if we were going to get the Emmaus story this year. He said no - it turns up in the year of Mark. (Say what?)
So I turned to it on my own. Taken at a personal level, and not as a historical event, it is one of the great stories of the Bible and our relationship with God. Marcus Borg quotes John Dominic Crossan on this: "Emmaus never happened. Emmaus always happens."
That says it all.
I agree. "what you are speaks so loud I can't hear what you say." We are a living expression of what we believe and the choices we make. I love your choices, Mike.
